CQ Houston Hotel

2015

Located in the Central Business District of downtown Houston near Discovery Green Park, Club Quarters Houston is a 403 key hotel renovation and conversion from a mixed residential development in 2015. A serene reservoir to reflect and rest, the design inspires dwellers to explore creative and natural resources downtown; such as the rediscovered Buffalo Bayou underground aquifer and the Rothko Chapel. Guest Lounge and reception areas soften existing Beaux Arts architectural details with minimal gestures and ambient lighting. Vivid contemporary interior notes ranging from rawhide furniture to an abstract snakeskin quarry- recall the texture and tone of Houston's urban and pastoral landscape. Artworks pay homage to Rothko's chapel and James Turrel's sky windows, while visually connecting an azure carpet path to photographs of the natural resources industry fueling CQ Houston business travel. Soft-goods and case-goods are custom crafted to incorporate advanced technological equipment, elevating brand standards while increasing comfort and ergonomics in public areas as well as cozy guest rooms.

Refurbishing the original Beaux Arts exterior facade details and renovating the original 2003 interiors over a decade later, I lead a team of architects, interior designers, real estate teams, engineers, technologists, branding designers, purchasing agents, fabricators and construction managers with Masterworks Development to transform CQ Houston into a premier, urban business traveler hotel. Without displacing revenue, the project met strict budget and timeline goals considering a delicate clientele- remaining100% operational during construction. The design and rebranding effort increased revenue and created a cohesive brand and business strategy as a proof of concept for future national properties. An additional 140 keys were gained in converting the mixed use skyscraper from apartment units to hotel studios and one bedroom suites. The interior lounge, lobby, gym, meeting rooms and collaborative work areas were gutted during a phased renovation, adapting services and hotel amenities to a globalized, tech savvy user.
